Founded in 1929 and displaying the elegant Spanish Colonial architecture of a more civilized age, Hacienda del Sol gets my vote for the best Foothills resort—not because it’s the most inclusive or ritzy, but because it reflects more than any other local accommodations (save perhaps the Arizona Inn) the beauty and rustic-chic of the high-style Southwest of yesteryear.
Each of the rooms ($109-$515 depending on the season) is distinctive, with custom-made furniture and a story all its own. There’s even a “Spencer Tracey Casita”, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen, where Tracey and Katherine Hepburn used to stay ($300-$515 depending on the season).
The small, comparatively inexpensive Historic Rooms look out on the enchanting courtyard, with an inviting outdoor pool and hot tub. Like its younger Foothill’s neighbors, Hacienda del Sol has a full-service spa, an excellent New American restaurant, a wonderful patio bar, riding stables and more.
There are also plenty of other outdoor activities to keep you occupied should you choose to take advantage of Tucson’s great climate. Hacienda del Sol is a member of the Arizona National Golf Club and has access to 5 great courses nearby. The resort also offers use of the facilities at the sport and wellness center at the JCC.
Tucson resort discount specials are available at Hacienda del Sol, generally found on the specials section of their website. They usually offer a few different summer specials as well as last-minute deals in case you get the sudden urge to live it up in Tucson for the week.
